Solid Waste Facility Design and Permitting

Interstate Waste Services, Inc.

Interstate Waste Services operations consisted of the processing of approximately 500 tons per day of mixed recyclable materials (commingled containers and mixed paper). Galli Engineering, P.C. was hired to design a 21,000 square foot mixed solid waste transfer station and 3,800 square foot loading dock adjacent to the existing recyclables materials processing facility capable of processing an additional 1,500 tons per day of mixed solid waste. Galli was responsible for site engineering, including:

• design of piles and pile caps
• footing design
• push wall design
• building design
• fire protection design
• ventilation and odor control design
• electrical and plant lighting design
• grading and drainage design and leachate control system
• backflow prevention systems
• all necessary submissions to the New Jersey regulatory agencies, including the New Jersey Department of Buildings and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection

In addition, Galli provided procurement services for the construction activities at the site. This included preparation of bid packages for the construction activities, as well as providing evaluations of the bids received from prospective contractors/vendors. Galli reviewed bid packages and prepared a letter report recommending the best prospective contractor for the work.

Upon completion of the building design and procurement services, Galli provided construction management and construction support services for the following:

• piles and pile caps
• footings
• structural steel framing and roof installation
• fire protection system
• ventilation and odor control system
• electrical and plant lighting systems
• grading and drainage systems and leachate collection and control systems

In addition, Galli personnel provided oversight during all controlled inspections including:

• pile installation
• concrete mix
• concrete cylinders
• soil compaction, etc.

Upon completion of the construction, Galli Engineering prepared the necessary Technical Reports required by the regulatory agencies for the controlled inspections and prepared the final "As Built" drawings documenting the work and certified compliance with the approved construction plans.
