Solid Waste Facility Design and Permitting
I.E.S.I. Varick Street - Brooklyn, NY

IESI Varick Street

The IESI stormwater management project was a multi-site drainage project at an existing Construction and Demolition Debris Transfer Station. The Facility is located at the eastern side of Varick Avenue, west of the Kosciuszko Bridge, in Brooklyn, NY. The project is owned by IESI NY Corporation and is overseen by The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York City Department of Sanitation.

IESI Varick StreetGalli Engineering, P.C. was retained to act as Project Civil Engineer, prepare a Site Drainage and Grading design for the existing Transfer Station, and oversee the installation of the stormwater system. The design included location of underground utilities, tipping floor drainage, pump station and piping design, and drainage calculations for the new basins and stormwater storage tanks. The project affected the entire site and had to provide a continuous concrete pad and a large detention volume for a site not served by any sewer. This needed to be accomplished without causing undue disruption to a very active site.

Galli Engineering, P.C. was further retained to observe the excavation of the surface material and provide project supervision and documentation. Galli Engineering's duties also included coordination with the contractor and subcontractors. Upon completion of the construction, Galli Engineering prepared a final "As Built" drawing which addressed the differences between the design and field installation. Galli Engineering continues to serve as the solid waste permitting engineer for all of I.E.S.I. s solid waste facilities in New York City.
